Epoxy resins are often used to protect NTC thermistors that can damage and impair performance. In high-strength epoxy resin, there are a large number of chemical properties required to protect thermistors. Industrial-grade epoxy resin has strong thermal conductivity and high dielectric strength.
The NTC thermistor coated with epoxy resin will have a teardrop shape with beads and two radial wires. These thermistors often appear in environments and applications where moisture is present. Epoxy-coated NTC thermistors can often be found inside medical equipment used to measure air temperature and air flow. They are also used in automotive applications to control and monitor the seat heating function and internal air conditioning. Due to the destructive conditions in colder climates, it is not uncommon to find epoxy bead thermistors in green energy equipment such as wind turbines. When the turbine encounters freezing rain and the temperature is below freezing, the icing of the blades will reduce the power and increase the rotor load.It is critical to protect NTC thermistors from direct contact with liquids such as water or oil. To achieve this, a thermally conductive epoxy is used as an encapsulant, called "potting," to seal the NTC thermistor temperature sensor in the stainless steel housing. This epoxy not only protects the NTC sensor from moisture, but also enables good heat conduction from the measured medium to the thermistor sensor. Thermally conductive epoxy provides efficient operation without degradation.
